Theater, Sports, and Space in the Lone Star State
Houston is the fourth major metropolis of the USA with more than 6 million of people. This Texan city is very diverse culturally due to its nearness to Mexico and the ethnically richness of its population. There is large Latino population, so it is no surprise that Spanish is widely spoken in Houston. In this cosmopolitan city full of great attractions, one of the most prominent Houston's features that culture and theater enthusiasts will find is the performing arts scene which is active year round. Another highlight is the museum district, giving a European touch to this Texan city. Waiting to be discovered are the astonishing sights at the Space Center Houston and Lyndon B Johnson Space Center, masterpieces at the Museum of Fine Arts, and a huge number of exhibits at the impressive Natural History Museum. Take a day out to explore the Houston Zoo or one of the many parks, or take in a baseball game at the Astrodome. In terms of entertainment and lively nights out, there are limitless choices but we certainly encourage you visit Bayou Place for cinemas theaters within one shining neon complex. You can furthermore look forward to various types of bars as well as restaurants with international and local Texan cuisine blended with Mexican flavors. As a technology hub and center for energy, Houston's main industries are oil, gas, and associated industries such as manufacturing, mining, petrochemicals, research, and marketing. The city is also host to 24 fortune 500 companies, making the services industry the number one employer by a slim margin. Expats needn't worry about finding career opportunities; as the fifth-largest city in the US, there are a diverse range of job paths to follow, from petroleum, IT and construction to hospitality and beauty. Finding a home in Houston can be intimidating; the choice of Houston proper, the metropolitan area and surrounding suburbs provide a huge geographical area to explore; read our guide articles for more detailed information on finding a realtor or choosing the right school for your child. Expats moving to Houston will, however, find an appealing and affordable quality of life as well as an excellent city infrastructure. Houston also has great medical centers along with large schools districts and international schools for your convenience and your necessities. In contrast, the local public transportation system cannot impress with a big, efficient network, so expats typically drive their own cars in order to move around more. Another challenging issue for expats may be that it takes a while to get used the high temperatures that can be experienced during the summer months between June and August. Fortunately, air-conditioned places are found everywhere, from homes, to banks and offices in general.
